RESCUING YOU FROM MEDICAL BILLING MISTAKES
| |
We Find The Most Common Ways Hospitals and/or Physicians Overcharge You.Medical facilities have charged people for services they never received.Hospitals are unfortunately known for charging patients for services, tests and medications which the patients never received. One study looked at 40,000 hospital bills and found 97% had errors! Hospital bills can be written in a complex and confusing way, it can be hard to tell if you’re being overcharged or not. To make sure you’re only paying for care you actually received, keep track of the tests you’re given, who came to talk to you, what you talked about, and how long they stayed and the medicine you are given take. Try to keep notes or have someone else do this for you by writing this information down. When you get your itemized bill, question every charge you don’t recognize. It’s your money, so ask questions! If you know an item is not covered by insurance or you do not have insurance, tell your physician to try to find less costly ways to treat you. The hospital can not perform a service without a physicians order. Your physician is there to treat the patient, not watch the costs of the treatment you have to stand up for your ability to pay for services. Some common ways hospitals can increase your bill includes charging you for supplies or services including:
Making Clerical Errors We are all human and people just make mistakes. You may be charged twice for the same test, or charged for a service your roommate received. If you keep a record of services, tests and medications you receive, you have the ability to catch these types of errors. Get these services, supplies, or room and board errors removed from your bill immediately. A couple of the most common clerical errors include being charged for the wrong type of room, in which you were charged a private room instead of semiprivate room or a typographical error where you were charged $500 for a $50 service. How do you Correct a Mistakes on Your Hospital Bill If you do find a mistake on your hospital bill, call the hospital’s billing department immediately. You always write down the date and time you called, whom you spoke with and what action will be taken and when it will be completed. Once you point out one or more mistake(s), it will usually be cleared up right away. If the problem has not been resolved, call your insurance company, hospital advocate department, and the hospital’s administrator. Always follow up with a letter about your concerns or findings. | |
